Henderson United Methodist Church in Callao presented a $25,000 check from the Jesse Ball duPont Fund and $500 from the church to the Northumberland Public Library during Sunday services, December 10.
The funds will help the library to expand internet and technology access to underserved residents of Northumberland County through its new Mobile Library and Tech Mobile.
“As a church we want to be part of that, so we are presenting them with two checks, one from Henderson and one from duPont,” said Pastor Esther Agbosu.
“I got on board because I thought it was a great idea,”’ said Mike Newsome, who chairs the church counsel. “I hope this goes a long way in helping them with what they need. They do a lot of good work down there at the library and kids need to read more.”
Library Director Cherie Carl told church members this was just the beginning.
“We have our lovely building in the heart of Heathsville, but we want to have some outreach so we can take our services out into the community,” said Carl. “As we move forward with this project, we look to you and members of our community to help us proceed and continue to do good work.”
The Jessie Ball duPont Religious, Charitable and Educational Fund supports organizations referenced in Mrs. duPont’s will and encourages those institutions to expand their capacity to serve their communities and find new and innovative ways to extend the reach of Mrs. duPont’s legacy. The church was among 24 grants, totaling $1.3 million to support organizations from across the country.
