Northumberland Public Library, the Family YMCA in Heathsville and the elementary school kicked off their summer reading partnership program READ 7000 last week.

Holding signs that said, “READ 7000”, Northumberland High School athletes and YMCA Camp counselors jogged around elementary school students. They also performed skits about the importance of reading to inspire NES students to read a combined 7000 books over summer break.

If the READ 7000 goal is achieved, a firetruck will visit the school in September to host a faculty bucket brigade contest. Losing NES faculty will be sprayed by the firetruck. Students who meet their individual reading goals will be invited to a Summer Reading Pizza Party at the beginning of the school year.
